Sony’s Japan Studio followed up last week’s mysterious ‘Panopticon’ trailer with a second offering today, revealing the project a a Vita multiplayer action game called Freedom Wars. The trailer also revealed it’s coming to Japan sometime next year.

The new trailer is an embellishment of the first one, providing more context. Panopticon seems to be the region Freedom Wars takes place in, totalitarian dystopia in the future. The world is devastated by dwindling resources and zero population growth – maybe because hundreds of millions are dying in war.

The YouTube blurb denotes Freedom Wars as a “multiplayer action” game. A collection of screens on the game’s website show what looks like squad-based skirmishes taking place across regions in Japan. One screen is a Yahoo Maps snapshot of the Shibuya region in Tokyo, but with icons superimposed on it indicating particular in-game locations.

Freedom Wars remains shrouded in mystery – although at least now we know it’s a Vita game. The website indicates more info will be spilled later this month.

What starts as an authentically gruff assessment of a hero of the Wild West, soon becomes a ridiculously excitable celebration of violence, arcade action and skill shots. If you want to place the exact moment when the launch trailer for Call of Juarez: Gunslinger descends into over-the-top silliness, it’s right around the line: “the face is one of Silas’ favourite places to shoot people.”

Previous Gunslinger footage has hinted that the story of Silas Greaves might not be as accurate as he’d have you believe. Here we see that in effect, as an ambush is switched out been Native Americans and cowboys – Greaves proving something of an unreliable narrator when it comes to the retelling of his tale.

Story aside, the action has more than a hint of Bulletstorm, thanks to the skill points awarded for certain kills, and an arcade mode that dispenses with the narrative altogether.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is out tomorrow.

There are already an absurd number of possible empires in Civilization 5. The vanilla game came with a not-inconsiderable eighteen, DLC gave the option for another seven, and the Gods & Kings expansion raised the total by a further nine. Then there are mods, letting you play an astonishing range of leaders, from Stalin to Adventure Time’s Princess Bubblegum.

As well as expanding the cultural victory path and bolstering democracy, the Brave New World expansion also increases the number of countries that can vie for dominance across your hexagonal world. Two more civs have just been announced: Indonesia, led by Gaja Mada, and Morocco, fronted by the sultan Ahmad al-Mansur.

Brave New World will add nine new civilisations when it’s released in July. Here are the seven that have been revealed so far:

Casimir of Poland

Pedro II of Brazil

Ashurbanipal of Assyria

Maria of Portugal

Shaka of the Zulu

Gaja Mada of Indonesia

Ahmad al-Mansur of Morocco

With two leaders yet to be announced, who would you like to see added?

Thanks, Joystiq.

Finally, the complex and compelling story of BlazBlue is getting the anime treatment with BlazBlue Alter Memory. According to Anime News Network, the story centers on Ragna the Bloodedge – you might know him as “humongous sword guy” – and the ragtag gang of pugilists determined to collect the bounty on his head. Somehow, a fox lady, a little vampire girl and a weird, anthropomorphic cat person figure in there as well.

BlazBlue Alter Memory is set to launch this fall.

Brave New World, the second expansion to Civilization 5, is due in July and will add nine new civilizations, several new wonders and modified mechanics from the base game.

DJ Hero developer FreeStyle Games is hiring a producer for IPTV gaming, according to a job listing on LinkedIn. The position will lead “the development of new multi-platform games with specific emphasis on online infrastructure-heavy video applications.”

“IPTV” could mean any number of platforms, including set-top boxes such as Apple TV and Roku. The job listing noted that the developer is working on a “new ground-breaking multi-platform and mobile project.”

FreeStyle Games posted a number of jobs to LinkedIn in the last week, including one for a mobile gaming producer role that will “develop strategies to leverage mobile enabled business models including free-to-play and freemium.” That person would also be in charge of creating “features to bridge online, console and mobile games to create a connected product.”

FreeStyle Games’ most recent efforts were seen in Sing Party for Wii U, so the Activision-owned developer hasn’t strayed too far from music-based games. Whether its next multi-platform and potentially free-to-play project falls in line with that genre remains to be seen.

With so many current and yet-to-be-released titles, you might feel as if you’re floating in a veritable moat of MOBAs. So what will Dawngate, the MOBA that EA didn’t-quite-announce last week, be doing to distinguish itself from the rest of the moat-murk? Quite a bit, actually, if this dev video’s anything to go by. Dawngate definitely looks like a MOBA, but the old formula’s being tinkered with to keep things fresh.

In this video with Machinima, a bunch of Waystone’s staff discuss the project. Creative director Hunter Howe has a special interest in lore and increasing the genre’s accessibility, as well as changing things up a little.

“We’re interested in some of the RTS roots of MOBAs,” he says. “In our game, we have economy nodes and territory-control gameplay that’s a little bit different to other MOBAs, while still trying to keep the core of what’s fun about a MOBA.”

Systems designer Alex Hutu elaborates, saying that one of the core features, spirit wells, are “economy objectives.” A spirit well will spawn workers that harvest currency for the controlling team, adding another layer to the standard MOBA gameplay.

Also tweaked is the destruction of towers. Destroying a tower makes Striders, the lane-straddling major minions, grow stronger—but the towers can also be regenerated, instantly dropping Striders back to their previous level of strength. It seems this might provide for some interesting player choices within matches, and provides teams lagging behind with a slightly increased change of victory.

Finally, community manager Andy Belford injects a little existentialism into the interview. “We’re not making this game for ourselves, we’re making this game for the player. If the players don’t like it, then what are we doing in this world?” he says, a little mournfully.

Interested in getting in on the action? Sign-ups are already available for the closed beta.
